From the islands of Bermuda, Katie Ewles is a composer, vocalist, pianist, lyricist, visual artist, and chocolate-lover, who uses her breadth of experience with both traditional and popular Western Art forms to create thought-provoking work that is captivating and memorable to a wide-range of audiences. Katie aims to redefine for herself what it means to be a ‘creator’ in the 21st century by actively engaging with synergy between art forms and styles, and by collaborating with other artists. This approach is evident in Katie’s distinctive work which is simultaneously intimate and universal, sophisticated and adventurous.
Primarily a musician, Katie began performing as a pianist and vocalist at a young age, and has gone on to enjoy success as a soloist in a variety of settings and styles in the US and in Bermuda. Recently, Katie has focused her attention towards rock, pop, jazz, blues, soul and R&B music, and currently contributes to creative development and performs as part of Baltimore-based groups, Chaunter, Sam & I, Freida & the Moon, and Color Correction.
In 2017, Katie graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where she studied composition, business studies and jazz voice. In recent years, she has premiered many memorable works, including Indeterminate (2015) for solo clarinet, Space/Time (2015) for fixed media, Conversations (2014) for guitar trio, Three Songs (2016) for voice, bass, guitar, piano, fiddle, and percussion, and N(one), a genre-bending, hour-long feature piece featuring over 18 players. In 2014 and 2016, Katie held an assistantship with award-winning film composer and producer, Bruce Faulconer.
Outside of music, Katie has recently experienced success in the Visual Arts, particularly as a painter. In 2015, her mixed media piece, ‘Pixelated Beauty’ was selected as part of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art Charman Prize Exhibition, and was subsequently published in their 2015 Catalogue of selected works. The work was later selected as part of The Garden Club’s Bloom into Art Exhibition, where the painting was assigned as an inspiration piece to competing international florists. The piece sold in late 2015, and resulted in commissions for similar works.
More recently, Katie has been featured in the Charman Prize 2017 Exhibition and Catalogue; BSOA’s In the Clouds Showcase (2019); Escape Artists Exhibit (2017); and was selected as the Charming Raven’s ‘Artist of the Month’ (Feb 2018).
In 2018, Katie installed public artwork ‘Together’ for the Corporation of Hamilton, Bermuda. The work, inspired by Bermuda kites, sought to emphasize the value and necessity of diversity. In 2019, Katie is looking forward to partnering with other organizations to install FOUR new murals! Keep your eyes out!
Katie is currently living and working in Baltimore as a freelance artist and musician. She frequently travels for work, and is available for commissions internationally. If you would like more info about Katie and her work, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
